In short: For a classic Norfolk Dog, go to Doug's Hot Dogs in Ocean View. For gourmet dogs and a cocktail, head to Boujiee Dogs & Cocktails on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. For dozens of toppings at a lower price, try Pittie Dog Grill in Norfolk's Riverview. On the Peninsula, Gus's Hot Dog King has been the answer since 1972. In Chesapeake, Lulu's Hot Dogs still serves a snappy tough-skin dog.
Every region has a food it quietly argues about. In Hampton Roads, it's the hot dog. Specifically, it's the Norfolk Dog: mustard, onions, and chili on a steamed bun, served here since a Greek immigrant named George Bacalis started selling them on City Hall Avenue in 1934 (Pittie Dog Grill review on Yelp; The Virginian-Pilot).
Whether you just got PCS orders or you've lived here 30 years and never left your side of the tunnel, here are five spots worth the drive and the neighborhoods they belong to.
First, what makes a Norfolk Dog?
For about 80 years, the Norfolk Dog depended on one specific hot dog: a skinny, salty, natural-casing Hormel frank sold nowhere in the world except Southeastern Virginia. When you bit in, it snapped. In January 2019, Hormel stopped making it because sales in one region couldn't justify production (The Virginian-Pilot).
Todd Goldman of Southern Packing Corp. in Chesapeake, who supplied that dog to nearly every old-school shop in the region, commissioned a replacement. In a blind taste test, the new dog scored the same as the original once it was topped. On its own, tasters still missed the old snap (Daily Press). Several spots below still carry the tradition.
1. Doug's Hot Dogs (Ocean View, Norfolk)
9643 Granby St, Ste D, Norfolk
Doug's has been an Ocean View fixture for decades, family-run by the Derring family across the street from the beach (VisitNorfolk). You choose a beef dog or a locally made Norfolk dog. Toppings range from plain cheese to mac and cheese, jalapeños, and even Cheetos (Wanderlog). Regulars say the homemade soups are as much of a draw as the dogs. The local Rotary club holds its annual Hot Dog Day here (Rotary Club of Norfolk).
Neighborhood tie-in: Ocean View is one of Norfolk's most popular spots for Bay-front living and a short drive from Naval Station Norfolk. Grab lunch at Doug's and walk across to Ocean View Beach Park (VisitNorfolk).
2. Boujiee Dogs & Cocktails (Shore Drive, Virginia Beach)
2951 Shore Dr, Virginia Beach · 757-957-1672 · Check hours before you go
Boujiee Dogs opened on Shore Drive in 2024 with more than 50 toppings and sauces, from pineapple and corn salsa to teriyaki mayo and mac and cheese (The Virginian-Pilot). Buns run from pretzel rolls and King's Hawaiian to Texas toast. The California Dog comes with French fried onions, cheddar, and BBQ sauce on a Hawaiian bun. The Kansas City Dog is wrapped in bacon with Swiss, sauerkraut, and thousand island (Coastal Virginia Magazine). There's also a Norfolk snap dog for traditionalists (Virginia Dogwood).
The "cocktails" part is real. Try the pickle margarita or an adult root beer float, and save room for the funnel cake fries (Coastal Virginia Magazine). Gluten-free buns and vegan dogs are available (The Virginian-Pilot).
Good to know: Kids 10 and under eat free all day Tuesday, with one kid's meal per adult order (Virginia Dogwood). At opening, it offered 10% off for military, first responders, and teachers. Ask if that's still running.
Neighborhood tie-in: Shore Drive runs along the Chesapeake Bay side of Virginia Beach, past First Landing State Park and close to JEB Little Creek–Fort Story. Bay-side neighborhoods here offer beach living without the Oceanfront crowds.
3. Pittie Dog Grill (Riverview, Norfolk)
4140 Granby St, Norfolk · Tue 11 a.m.–3 p.m. · Wed–Sat 11 a.m.–7 p.m. · Sun 11 a.m.–5 p.m. · Closed Mon (Pittie Dog Grill)
The newest spot on this list opened in late 2023 in the Riverview Village section of Granby Street (The Virginian-Pilot). It has already been voted Best Hot Dog in Norfolk for 2024 (Pittie Dog Grill). Every dog is a charbroiled Sabrett all-beef frank, in sizes from a $3.95 skinless "Puppy Pittie" up to a quarter-pound or a footlong (Pittie Dog Grill online menu). There are more than 40 toppings, gluten-free buns, and a plant-based dog. The restaurant also champions the misunderstood pit bull, hence the name (Find Me Gluten Free; Yelp).
Neighborhood tie-in: Riverview sits right by the Virginia Zoo, which makes this the easiest family day in Norfolk: zoo in the morning, dogs for lunch.
4. Gus's Hot Dog King (Newport News)
10725 Jefferson Ave, Newport News · Mon 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m. · Tue–Sat 10:30 a.m.–8 p.m. · Closed Sun (Gus's Hot Dog King)
Gus's has been serving Newport News since 1972. Order the loaded hot dog, a beer bratwurst, the funnel fries, and the banana pudding (Gus's Hot Dog King). Ask anyone on the Peninsula where to get a hot dog and "HDK" comes up fast. Locals call it a staple for more than five decades and also recommend the pulled pork (r/HamptonRoads).
Neighborhood tie-in: If you're relocating to the Peninsula for the shipyard, Fort Eustis, or Langley, Jefferson Avenue is a main artery you'll drive constantly. Gus's is the reward on it.
5. Lulu's Hot Dogs (Chesapeake)
4402 Indian River Rd, Chesapeake · Mon–Sat 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m. · Closed Sun (Tripadvisor)
Lulu's is one of the few places still serving a true tough-skin dog. When Hormel stopped making the original, the owners chose their own replacement rather than the one most shops switched to (Daily Press). Order it "all the way," meaning mustard, onions, and chili. A tough-skin dog runs $3.50 (Tripadvisor). Reviewers single out the chili as one that actually has spices (Yelp).
Neighborhood tie-in: The Indian River corridor is classic Chesapeake: established neighborhoods, easy access to both Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and lunch spots locals guard closely.
Bonus: two old-school drive-ins
Doumar's Cones & Barbecue (Ghent, Norfolk)
1919 Monticello Ave, Norfolk · Mon–Sat 9 a.m.–11 p.m. · Closed Sun (Doumar's)
Doumar's is best known for waffle cones, which the family says it invented in 1904, and it still makes them on the original machine (Three Best Rated). It also serves one of the most unusual hot dogs in the region. It's split and grilled on a hamburger roll, with mustard, relish, and onions, or double meat if you're hungry (Doumar's menu on SinglePlatform). One regular praised how finely they chop the onions (joe coffee). Carhops still bring trays to your car window (Doumar's). Order a hot dog, a barbecue sandwich, and a cone for dessert.
Smitty's Better Burger (Hampton)
1313 N King St, Hampton
Smitty's Better Burger is an old-school drive-in with carhops (Visit Hampton). It sits right down King Street from Langley Air Force Base. Its "Twirly Dog" is a spiral-cut hot dog wrapped in fried dough (r/Mustang), and regulars say to pair it with tater tots (Wanderlog). Neither Doumar's nor Smitty's is a pure hot dog stand, so they get the bonus spots.
